Confederate Army Facts

  • It is tough to discern an accurate count of the number of individuals who served in the Confederate Army due to incomplete and destroyed Confederate records
    • Some estimate between 750,000-1,000,000 men served at any time during the war but estimates range from 500,000-2,000,000
  • Most soldiers were volunteers but conscription was eventually used without much success starting in 1862
  • 6% of Union soldiers were conscripts; about 12% estimated Confederate soldiers conscripted
  • Estimated 94,000 killed or mortally wounded in battle, 164,000 dead due to disease, and 26,000-31,000 dead in Union prison camps
